Surrender to the process

5050 Show The project seemed pretty straight forward, create 50 pieces of artwork in 50 days. Or at least that’s what I thought when chosen by juror Brian Gross of Brian Gross Fine Art in SF and The Sanchez Art Center. Little did I know how much this project would push me creatively.

At times I was in the flow and ideas and pieces seemed to magically appear. Other days they had to be dragged kicking and screaming out of my head and through my hands.

The first couple of weeks were great, it was all new and exciting. Then week three came and I realized that I had only completed 15 pieces out of 50. It was then I realized how much art 50 pieces actually is. What did I get myself into? I had another 4 weeks of this to go! We had to work within a theme and soon that theme was fighting back, challenging me to come up with new ways to make the piece different but cohesive. Then somewhere along the way I just stopped thinking and kept creating. I didn’t have time to think or plan, I just has to make art. It was a wonderful feeling to surrender to the process. I did it, I created 50 pieces of artwork. I love the pieces and to be honest I am a little sad it is over. These little pieces took on a life of their own and let me explore subject matter, technique, materials and new ways of creating. I loved it, I hated it and in the end it was one of the best art making experiences I have had.

I hung up all 50 pieces today and the exhibit opens to the public this Friday at the Sanchez Art Center. If you can’t make it to the opening (or even if you can) you can always pre-purchase a piece by emailing me. Each 6x6 piece is $120 and a portion of the proceeds goes to the Sanchez Art Center fundraiser. Every year hundreds of people attend the opening to snap up their favorite piece of the over 3,000 small, affordable, wonderful works of art. I hope to see you there.

The 50|50 Show opens with a Preview Fundraiser from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, August 26. The 50|50 Show is unique in that you take purchased artworks with you starting at 7:30 pm opening night, so attending the Preview is the only way to see this show in its entirety.

Any tickets left on opening night can be purchased for $30 at the door, but securing tickets in advance is highly recommended. (Last year this event sold out, and this year tickets are selling at a fast pace!)
